Retaining Wall Drainage & Footings in Langley, BC

Most failed retaining walls in the Fraser Valley didn't fail because of the stone. They failed because water built up behind them with nowhere to go, and the pressure pushed them over. The footing and the drainage are the parts you never see and the parts that decide whether a wall lasts five years or fifty. We build both right on every wall, and we'll retrofit them on a wall that's failing.

What's included

When you need drainage & footings

Building a new wall

Drainage and footing are part of every wall we build, never skipped.

A wall that's holding water

If your wall weeps, stains, or pushes after rain, the drainage failed or was never there.

Wet, clay-heavy ground

Langley's clay holds water. On these lots, drainage is everything.

Our process

  1. 1

    Read the water

We figure out where water comes from and where it needs to go.

  2. 2

    Dig and base

Excavate to depth and compact a proper granular footing.

  3. 3

    Drain system

Weeping tile, clear crush, and filter fabric go in behind the wall.

  4. 4

    Daylight it

We run the drain to a proper outlet so water actually leaves.

Drainage & Footings: common questions

What kind of retaining walls do you build?

Masonry walls: mortared natural stone, brick, armour stone and boulder walls, and reinforced concrete block or segmental walls. We're a mason, so stone and brick are our specialty, but we build the right wall for your site.

How tall can a retaining wall be?

We build walls of all heights. Once a wall passes about a metre, or holds a load like a driveway, it usually needs an engineer's design and a permit. We arrange both so it's done by the book.

Why do retaining walls fail?

Almost always water. When water builds up behind a wall with no drainage, the pressure pushes it over. That's why we put as much work into the footing and drainage as the stone you see.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Langley?

Lower garden walls usually don't, but taller or load-bearing walls do, and the rules vary between Langley City, the Township, and Surrey. We'll tell you what your wall needs and handle the permit and engineering if it does.

How long does a retaining wall take to build?

It depends on the size, the stone, and the site access. A small garden wall can be a couple of days; a large engineered wall can run a week or more. We'll give you a realistic timeline when we quote.
