When you need mass, not a pretty stack
Armour stone and boulder walls are for real grade. A driveway cut into a bank. An acreage slope that keeps sliding. A building pad that needs a shoulder. The wall works because each rock is heavy and it's leaned back into the hill, not because someone glued a face on.
This is the look people want on treed Brookswood and Aldergrove lots, and on the steeper Maple Ridge hillsides. It reads as part of the land. A crisp block wall can look wrong in those places.
How a boulder wall is set
We size the stone to the height and the load. Then we excavate a keyed base so the bottom course can't kick out. Each boulder is placed by machine, seated, and battered back. Chinking fills the gaps so soil doesn't pipe through.
Drainage still matters. Big rock doesn't magically ignore water. We put free-draining fill and fabric behind the wall and give the water a path out. Skip that and even a 2-tonne stone will start to roll forward after enough wet winters.
Access, machines, and tight lots
Boulder work needs room for equipment. If we can get a machine to the bank, the job is efficient. If the only path is a 3-foot side yard, we talk about smaller stone, a different system, or extra labour to stage material. We'll tell you that on the first visit, not halfway through.
On new-build lots with open access, armour stone goes up faster than people expect. On older hillside homes, the planning is the job.
Boulders vs interlocking block
Block is neater. Boulders are tougher to look at and tougher to move. For a rural bank, rock often wins on both looks and lifespan. For a tight modern backyard, block or poured concrete usually wins.
