A lot of people say stone wall when they mean cultured veneer glued to something else. A natural stone retaining wall is different. It's real stone, selected and set by a mason, mortared into a wall that holds the bank. The face is the structure, or it's tied to a reinforced backing if the height calls for it. Either way, you're not looking at a thin skin that pops off after two winters.

Where stone is the right call

How we build one so it stays put
We start in the dirt. Excavate, compact a granular footing below frost, and set the drain before a stone goes down. Weeping tile, clear crush, filter fabric, and a real outlet. Langley clay will find any shortcut you left.
Then the stone. Each piece is picked for the course, set in mortar, and pointed so water sheds off the face. Caps finish the top so the wall doesn't take weather through an open joint. If the height or the load needs an engineer, we bring one in before we build, not after the city shows up.
Stone vs the cheaper options
Interlocking block is faster. Timber is cheaper on day one. Poured concrete holds a driveway well. Stone costs more in hours because a person has to choose and set it. What you get back is a wall that doesn't look like a product, and a finish that gets better as it weathers.
